A brief History

HOTEL10, as we now know it, is the metamorphosis of two completely distinct buildings, in their architecture as much as in their purpose. The historical section, called “Edifice Godin,” was built in 1915 by architect Joseph-Arthur Godin. It was one of Canada’s first residential concrete buildings built in the Art Nouveau style, a European artistic movement inspired by nature, curves, and arabesques (1890-1914). In the early 1990s, the building became a sort of art commune home to musicians, sculptors, designers, and photographers, while squatters invaded the unoccupied section.

The modern part of the hotel sits on the former site of a Methodist church built in 1865. It was devastated by a fire in 1986 and was finally demolished in 1997. In the late 1990s, Saint-Laurent Boulevard. became the trendiest artery in Montreal. Chic restaurants and a slew of hot nightclubs inspired investors to set up a boutique hotel in “Edifice Godin.” Then, in 2004, Montreal architect Dan Hanganu was commissioned to renovate and enlarge the building on the side bordering the site of the former church. And so, HOTEL Opus was born: a one-of-a-kind building in Montreal said to be the quintessence of modern design.

In 2012, Tidan took it over to breathe new life into this hotel and became HOTEL10, which magnificently harmonizes two contrasting architectural styles.
