Le Mount Stephen was originally the residence of Scottish Baron George Stephen who had it built in 1880. A Scottish immigrant, Stephen eventually became one of the most powerful men in the Canadian garment industry and served as President of both the Bank of Montreal and the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Converted into a private club around 1926, Le Mount Stephen was classified as a historic monument in 1975 by the Quebec government and designated as a national historic site by the Canadian government. In 2006,
